  • Self-Love

17 MAR 2021 · Self-love. It may not come natural to most of us. In fact, usually the opposite is true. But once we begin to clear away the wreckage of our past and establish some new healthy practices, we can find acts of self-love everywhere. In this episode Willy and Cameron get into self-love. When we’re on top of our game and firing on all cylinders it can be easy to love ourselves. But what about when we’re struggling? Is it possible to love ourselves when we aren’t living up to our potential? The truth is self-love is learned. Just like anything else in that regard, it gets better with practice. Just ask this week’s war story. Scott shares with us his amazing tale of recovery and the journey he has been on since learning how to love himself after finally getting clean. Though he was always quick to show and express love to those around him, the one person Scott struggled to love was himself. From the schoolyard to the jailhouse, into the courtroom and on to multiple treatment centers, hear what it took for him to finally get some solid footing beneath him and begin being more of the man he always knew he could be. Scott and his wife Olivia are the hosts of Choosing Recovery, a YouTube channel sharing people’s stories of recovery, along with other conversations around addiction. You can also find their videos along with their blogs at www.choosing-recovery.com. A lot of great stories shared here including our own Cameron and Willy! • Working With Others

10 MAR 2021 · We hear it all the time. We work on ourselves so that we can give ourselves away. When all else fails, working with others works. Why is that? In this week’s episode Cameron and Willy get into working with others! There is a reason that this is the 12th step in the A.A. program. There’s a lot we must do first before we can be sure we have a message to share with others. But on the flipside, without it, we’re often incomplete. This week’s warstory knows all too well about feeling incomplete. Jim Thomson, A.K.A. “The Enforcer” had a reputation in the NHL for his rough and tough demeanor on the ice. Out of the rink he was living a fast and destructive lifestyle with no signs of stopping. Eventually, the pain of staying the same outweighed the fear of change and he was able to get the help he needed. Hear how he did it and how working with others is his TRUE calling in life. • Having made a decision

2 MAR 2021 · Many of us reached a point where the truth in our behavior was staring back at as full force. Some call this a moment of clarity. It can happen after we've finally spent enough time at our rock bottom or after a dramatic incident. Whatever the cause, we're grateful for it. It's in that moment that we make a firm decision to do whatever it takes to change. Step 3 of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous says "Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understand him." In this episode, Willy and Cameron talk about turning over our will after making a decision that a power greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity. This step is a crucial one and does not only happen in a 12 step process. Any time we are looking to self improve, tapping in to a higher power is a crucial element. Insert your own definition of a higher power here. Tony found a power greater than himself after years of constant alcohol abuse that had him making excuses for negative behavior. The lie that he was only hurting himself finally wore off and he was able to see his actions for what they really were. He made a firm decision to change his life, put down the bottle and found a community in Taekwondo. Not only is he now bettering himself, he's helping those around him by continuing to show up for himself. • People Pleasing

23 FEB 2021 · How much of ourselves are we willing to sacrifice in order to please others? Where is the line between "service work" and "people pleasing?" How can we learn to say "no" in a loving and non-threatening way? This week's episode is about people pleasing. It can have drastic consequences and extreme repercussions yet for many of us, it's a way for us to get validation. In some cases, it can lead us down a dark path and cost us that which we hold most precious: our integrity, morals, and values. Our warstory this week is from Alex who knows just how much "people pleasing" cost. Though he managed to lose himself in basketball in his youth, when an injury had him warming the bench, he began to fall in with the rough crowd of peers in Los Angeles and became immersed in the drug scene. Living life this way eventually cost him his freedom and he spent some time behind bars. Tune in to hear what it finally took for him to take his life back and begin surrendering to a solution that has him free of drugs and alcohol. Thank you Alex for sharing your story! • Being Teachable

16 FEB 2021 · Do you ever feel like you know everything? A lot of us sure thought so when we were out drinking and using. It wasn't until we were able to shatter that notion that we were truly able to begin receiving help. In short, we had to be teachable. So what does it mean to be teachable? In this week's episode we get into how being teachable played a role in early recovery and how it still seems a crucial part of our daily lives. We find lessons come from all sorts of unexpected places if we are open to receive them. The more we're willing to remain teachable, the better chance we stand at living happy, joyous and free. Our warstory this week comes from the other half of the Rehab Barbie podcast! Claire joins us to tell us what life was like growing up misdiagnosed as bi-polar and using cocaine from a young age. In college, she began to realize that she didn't drink the way other people did. After many failed attempts to control it, she began to realize that she was indeed an alcoholic. She became teachable and started seeking knowledge about the disease of alcoholism and the physiological effects produced by alcohol. In their podcast, Melissa and Claire get into the science of addiction and how that helps them in their sober lives. We're honored to share their stories and hope you'll check out their podcast (before they get sued by Mattel!) Underlying Issues

9 FEB 2021 · Reasons we drink or drug can often include the need to escape from or get a sense of relief from our underlying issues. In sobriety we're able to begin looking at these issues to determine how best to deal with them in a healthy and constructive manner. Not doing so can have disastrous consequences for our sobriety. In this episode Cameron and Willy talk about underlying issues. How can we recognize them? What can we do about them? Were they really what was making us drink or drug? What are your thoughts? Listen in and add to the conversation in the comments. This week's Warstory is a good one! Melissa from Rehab Barbie podcast joins us to share what it was like, what happened, and what it's like now. Melissa's journey to surrender was not an easy one. Even though she drank alcoholically from the get-go, it was Adderall that really got its hooks in her. After finally giving that up, she refused to think of alcohol as a problem until it too became undeniable. Now, after finally surrendering, hear what life is like for her today. HINT: awesome. • Intention

26 JAN 2021 · "If your intention is powerful, your action will be powerful. If your action is powerful, your results will be powerful." -Unknown In the morning we lay our groundwork for the day. If we start with intention, and follow through with action our chances of success increase exponentially. So what is "intention?" Let's talk about it. In this episode Willy and Cameron talk about intention. Willy gets in to his morning workout and how he puts specific intention behind every rep. Cameron tries to investigate what intention actually is while talking about his own experience with it. Tune in to hear them get deep with it. Our warstory this week comes from Stephen who, after you've heard his story, you'll agree is quite a badass! Stephen was drinking because that just seemed to be the thing to do. After the death of a close relative, he started drinking to numb the pain. As it progressed, the disease started having massive consequences on his health and he was told he could never drink again. Little did he know at the time that putting down the bottle was just the beginning of the many challenging things he would face and overcome in his journey. • Willingness

19 JAN 2021 · "It takes what it takes." This is a saying we hear often around the recovery community. But what exactly are we saying when we say this? We have to get to a place where the pain of staying the same outweighs the fear of staying the same. Only then do we become willing to do the things we don't want to do. In this episode we're joined by long-time brother in recovery Cole T. Cole has a way of sharing his experience that makes it easy to identify. Together with Cameron and Willy they dive deep into the importance of willingness. Tune in to hear what it was like and how this plays a role in their lives today. Our warstory this week is a powerful story from Brittany, a new friend and wonderful voice in recovery. Brittany built her identity around being the party girl in order to give her the validation she was after. Being well educated kept her in denial about her addiction as she was far from the alcoholic living under the bridge. Her journey with opiates eventually led her to becoming a full on junkie. Faced with some dire alternatives, she finally took getting sober seriously and looking at her today, you would never know the road she has traveled. She works on social media to break the stigma of recovery and spread a positive message of strength and hope. We're honored to share her story with you. Resolutions

12 JAN 2021 · It's that time of year! Everybody is talking about setting goals for the New Year! And why not? For most of us, it's the perfect time to consider the slate clean, start fresh and go after all the things we failed at doing last year. So what makes this year different? On this episode Willy and Cameron talk all about resolutions. Why talk about resolutions? Because where had been our high resolve! Remember all those time we swore off drinking! Swore we'd never use again! And for what? We had to get to that jumping off point before we were willing to get the help we needed. So what did that teach us about ourselves and about goals? It's worth talking about! Our warstory this week comes from Sydney! Caught up in the thrill of the rebellion that alcohol made her feel, she pursued her disease with reckless abandon! The toll it began taking on her body wasn't enough for her to put down the booze all together. It wasn't until a close and personal glimpse at an alcoholic death touched her that she was able to let it go. Hear what life is like for her today! Thank you Sydney for sharing your story!
