The Scripture texts read in your hearing are Deuteronomy 1.24-33 and Mark 6.1-6. Our topic today is Get Unstuck.
CHRONOLOGY.
1. This visit to Nazareth in Mark 6 is the same as that mentioned by Matthew (Mat 13:54-58). This was his second time coming back to Nazareth.
2. But different from that recorded by Luke (Luk 4:14-30). They tried to take his life the first time he taught in the synagogue in Nazareth. This was the beginning of His ministry after His temptation in the wilderness.
3. Some other miracles intervened between the raising of Jairus’ daughter (Mar 5.21-43) and this rejection (Mat 9:27-34).
The 1st time Jesus went to the synagogue alone. The 2nd time His disciples were with Him. Perhaps He was further preparing His disciples for ministry and rejection.
His hometown marveled at His teaching. Still rejected Him. Mark 1.21-23
His hometown marveled at His wisdom. Still rejected Him. James 3.13-17
His hometown marveled at His miracles. Still rejected Him. John 10.37-38; 11.45-48
They had living proof in their presence and they still rejected Him. They were too familiar with His background. Dare I say they were stuck.
Allow me to conclude this way. Look at Mark 6.1-6 from 3 viewpoints.
I. Will you see it from Jesus’ perspective and walk in your assignment regardless of what others think?
II. Will you see it from the perspective of His relatives and hold others back. Please, do not be a discourager. There are some who have assignments from the LORD that we need to support. Encourage them and respect their growth.
III. Will you see it from the perspective of those in His hometown synagogue who was too familiar with Jesus to believe Him to be the Messiah? I pray none of us has gotten too familiar with Jesus or the church that we miss out on a fresh anointing from the Holy Spirit. Don’t get stuck where you are.
Gathering together for worship can be like a family reunion or class reunion. Let’s us appreciate the growth of others. And may we all continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.
