Specialty Berliner-Style Weisse
-Color – While traditional Berliners are the lightest of all the German wheat beers, ranging from straw to pale, Specialty Berliners are brewed, packaged or served with fruit(s), darker malt(s), syrups or other ingredients, and therefore may take on corresponding hues.
-Clarity: May appear hazy or cloudy from yeast or chill haze
-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Malt sweetness is absent. Very low to low level attributes of darker malts (if used) may be present.
-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Not present
-Perceived Bitterness: Not present to very low
-Body : Very Low
-Additional notes: The unique combination of yeast and lactic acid bacteria fermentation yields a beer that is acidic. Carbonation is high. Specialty Berliners are brewed or served with fruit or fruit syrups, spices or herbal syrups, darker malts or a wide range of other ingredients, and will exhibit sensory attributes typical of those ingredients, such as hue, aroma, taste and body.
-ABV: 2.8%-5.0%
-Glassware: Goblet (or Chalice) - (Description courtesy of BeerAdvocate.com) - Majestic pieces of work, ranging from delicate and long stemmed (Goblet) to heavy and thick walled (Chalice). The more delicate ones may also have their rims laced with silver or gold, while the heavy boast sculpture-like stems. Some are designed to maintain a 2-centimeter head. This is achieved by scoring the inside bottom of the glass, which creates a CO2 nucleation point, and a stream of eternal bubbles and perfect head retention as a result.
Benefits: Eye candy. Designed to maintain head. Wide-mouthed for deep sips.
Examples – GABF Winners 2019
Gold Medal: Midwestern Exotic - Barrel Theory Beer Co. – St. Paul, MN
ABV 4.0 %
Notes: Gose with calamansi (Philippine lime), blood orange, tangerine, & peach.
Silver Medal: Jungalow Juice - Arrow Lodge Brewing – Covina, CA
ABV 4.5%
Notes: German style tart wheat ale with guava and passion fruit.
