9 JUL 2026 · The core misconception is confusing self-regulation with self-control, which often fails to address behaviours rooted in a dysregulated stress system, especially in cases involving trauma histories or allostatic overload. A shift is necessary in schools and parenting away from punishment-based self-control approaches toward applying neuroscientific understanding to reduce children's stress load and model self-compassion, leading to better outcomes.
