19 JAN 2019 · Meet Kangol Kid --- (Thanks again, Rhonda Supreme) Shaun Shiller Fequiere, known by his stage name, Kangol Kid, or, alternatively, The Kangol Kid, is an American hip hop producer, songwriter, break dancer, and emcee. Kangol is best known as a member of the old school hip hop group, UTFO. Early life Kangol was born in Brooklyn, New York. He acquired his nickname, The Kangol Kid, from neighborhood friends during the early 80s, because of the many Kangol hats he owns and wears. He is also officially sponsored by Kangol Headwear, Inc. UTFO member Kangol was originally a breakdancer along with his dance partner, Doctor Ice. In 1984, UTFO became one of the most popular rap and breakdance acts in the country on the strength of their breakout single, "Roxanne, Roxanne." During the mid-80s, as "Roxanne, Roxanne" gained popularity and chart position, UTFO was voted best rap group, at the 1988 Urban Music Awards, had featured spots on Don Cornelius' Soul Train, The Phil Donahue Show, and performed live for actors such as Dustin Hoffman, and Tony Danza. UTFO was the first rap group to perform at Harlem's Apollo Theater as they opened for Hall & Oates and the Temptation's Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin. In 1987, UTFO released their most popular selling album, Lethal. The title song featured the rock group Anthrax and later that year became the number one rap album in the United States. Current activities Besides writing and producing songs, Fequiere has recorded voice-overs for various MTV commercials & animations, jingles for New York City's HOT 97 radio station and wrote his own column in Black Beat magazine entitled, "Yo Kangol". The column was designed to answer music related questions for up and coming artists nationwide. In 2004, Fequiere scored the music for an independent film entitled Nightmare which later won an award for “Best Movie Score”. Fequiere currently balances his time between Producer, Composer, Performer, Artist Manager, Songwriter, President of his music production company, Kangol's Kreations, Inc., and CEO of his Public Relations firm, Kreative Media Group. Fequiere's lecturing at High Schools and Colleges nationwide on today's business of music has led this Brooklynite to receiving a proclamation from the City of New York for being among the first Haitians in Hip-Hop Music.[2] Today, the Kangol sound can be heard on female R&B groups such as 3LW, Tres Jolie, and Blaque, as well as Latin pop group C-Note, who recorded a remake of Whistle's "Right Next To Me". He is also known for hits like “Weak at the Knees”, “Way Out”, “Nobody Can Be You”, “Feel So Real” and “Dancing In The Key Of Life”. Arrington’s songs have been sampled by the likes of Jay-Z, Jermaine Dupri, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Snoop, LL Cool J, Mariah Carey, N.W.A, Masters At Work and Pitbull. He landed a spot in percussionist, Coke Esovedo’s band, and eventually moved in with the percussionist and his manager. He become a Latin soul apprentice and protégé. Arrington went on to play (and tour) with Escovedo’s older brother, Pete and niece, Sheila - now known as Sheila E. His performance tour included guitarist, Carlos Santana. As that tour was ending, Arrington returned to Dayton to join a group called Slave, as a drummer. Some time later, he became Slave's lead singer. During the next four years, he contributed to Dayton's most successful period. During that period, dance floor classics like “Watching You,” “Just a Touch of Love,” Snap Shot,” and “Wait for Me” flourished. In 1982, Arrington left Slave and formed Steve Arrington’s Hall of Fame. After signing with Atlantic Records, he completed several singles and solo albums -- “Dancin In The Key”, which spent three weeks at #2 on the dance charts and “Feel So Real’’, which landed #6 on the UK Singles Chart. In 1986, Arrington was nominated for a NAACP Image Award for Male Artist of the Year. In 2000, he won a Grammy for his contribution to “Money Ain’t A Thang”, performed by Jay Z and Jermaine Dupri. In 1991 (at the height of his career), Arrington left the music business to dedicate his life to spirituality. He is the self-proclaimed "Fresh Prince of South Beach", born and raised in South Miami to Jamaican parents. He endured a rough life as a teenager and young adult, including two years in a juvenile facility and several years homeless, which led to a series of arrests from 2010 until 2013 for theft, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He eventually turned his life around and landed a job with Varsity LG, one of Miami's largest event promotions companies.
