24 MAR 2020 · In 'Weekend Bigots', Scotsman journalist Kevan Christie takes you into the murky world of sectarianism in Scottish football, from the 1970s right up to the present day, talking to people who have been involved at the sharp end of the game. In the six-part series Kevan speaks to former footballers Derek Ferguson and Mickey Weir, ex-Scotland manager Craig Brown, former grade one referee Stuart Dougal, sports journalist Andrew Smith and of course the fans. The podcast poses the thorny question of why the divide still exists in Scotland to this day, and asks what can be done to change attitudes.

On the second episode of Weekend Bigots, ex-Hearts and Rangers star Derek Ferguson and former Hibs wing wizard Mickey Weir talk about fulfilling that dream. Kevan asks them about their experiences with sectarianism both on and off the pitch. Both ex-players are now ambassadors for 'Show Racism the Red Card' and visit schools to educate children about the dangers of getting caught up in racism and sectarianism. In this week’s episode of the ‘Weekend Bigots’ podcast, Kevan Christie invites former grade one referee Stuart Dougal to give a unique view. Stuart discusses how refereeing wasn’t his first career choice but says that, after being entinced by a friend of his father’s to attend a training course, he fell in love with the job. But in this week's episode of Weekend Bigots, Terry Christie and Tom Hendrie discuss the reality of juggling these roles. Christie, an ex-headmaster and manager of Meadowbank Thistle, Stenhousemuir and Alloa Athletic, is widely regarded as one of the best part-time managers this country has produced, and gained fame as the duffle-coat wearing cup shock specialist. Tom Hendrie is a former manager of St Mirren, Berwick Rangers and Alloa Athletic, and was once a pupil of Christie’s at Forrester High School in Edinburgh before going on - like his friend and mentor - to play professionally for Dundee FC. They both acknowledge that religious rivalries play a part in the Old Firm, and explain how much of this is learned behaviour from school. 1 APR 2021 · Host Kevan Christie turns the microphone to the fans in the final episode of Weekend Bigots, including two supporters who admit to having taken part in sectarian abuse in the past. Kevan travels through to Hampden to meet the punters ahead of the League Cup final between Rangers and Celtic, hearing from fans from both sides of the Old Firm divide on their views about sectarianism and what they think should be done to eradicate the problem. Supporters speak candidly about what the rivalry means to them and challenge some of the negative stereotypes often portrayed in the media. The second half of the episode hears Kevan talk to two self-confessed ‘weekend bigots’, Andrew and Brian (not their real names), who talk openly and honestly about their past behaviour and how they regret it upon reflection.
