Think with Danny is a wide-ranging show about lifelong learning, entertainment, and the ideas that stick with you. Each episode follows a question or a topic all the way down, history, culture, psychology, story, whatever's worth thinking about, and stops along the way to test its own conclusions before trusting them. The host, Danny Ballan, never pretends to have it all figured out going in. It’s just one person thinking out loud, in public, and inviting you to think along.

5 OCT 2026 · Somewhere along the way, conversation became a pitch. We open with a hook, deliver our value proposition, keep it short, keep it emotional, and wrap it up before anyone checks their phone. We do it at work, and we do it with strangers, but the strange and sad part is that many of us now do it with the people closest to us. In this episode, Danny looks at what happens when every talk has to make sense, stay on topic and earn its place. It begins with the story of a young Beirut entrepreneur who has rehearsed the perfect sixty-second pitch, and then gets trapped in an elevator for two hours with the investor he was pitching and a teenage delivery boy with a bag of shawarma. From there, Danny looks at the murky origins of the elevator pitch, the famous claim that we now have shorter attention spans than goldfish and why it doesn't hold up, research showing that we badly underestimate how much others want deeper conversation, and an old Arabic proverb that says talk has many branches. He also makes a serious case for brevity, admits that he's a professional compressor himself, and asks what we're losing when we never reach the third hour of a conversation. 24 AUG 2026 · A billionaire predicts that in ten to twenty years, nobody will need to work, money will stop mattering, and governments will simply pay everyone enough to live well. He may even be right about the machines. This episode isn't about whether the robots can do it. It's about what happens to you the day your income stops being something you earned and becomes something you receive — from an institution that can also stop. We look at strikes you can no longer call, wars you can no longer refuse, a class system with no ladder in it, and roughly seven billion people who were never in the room when the plan was drafted. Sarcastic for a while. Then not at all.Read the full article on my website: https://englishpluspodcast.com/universal-high-income-sounds-wonderful-until-you-ask-who-signs-the-check/
18 AUG 2026 · Somewhere along the way, the people who cure diseases, write the books that outlive us, and teach children to read stopped being celebrated and started being described as "boring." Meanwhile, attention and money have flowed toward a kind of fame that produces very little that lasts. In this episode, we take that story apart — including the parts of it that aren't true. Were scientists and poets ever really celebrities? What actually collapsed, and when? Why is the influencer economy a lottery rather than a career? And what do you honestly say to a seventeen-year-old who asks whether it's stupid to want to be a physicist, a translator, or a high school teacher — when the honest answer isn't a motivational poster? This one includes a section where the jokes stop entirely, because the money part deserves that. It ends somewhere small.Read the full article on my website: https://englishpluspodcast.com/the-boring-people-built-everything-why-we-stopped-celebrating-scientists-poets-and-teachers/
17 AUG 2026 · We've all done it. We spot the tell-tale AI phrasing, screenshot it, post it with a face of disgust, and get a small hit of moral applause. But here's the uncomfortable part: the thing that put that post in front of us was also a machine. We handed over curation years ago without a single protest, and now we're staging a rebellion against authorship. In this episode, we dig into what we're calling the AI Performed Disgust Hypocrisy: not to defend the endless flood of generated garbage, which is real and is genuinely making the internet worse, but to ask why our disgust lands where it lands, and why it so rarely lands on the human-made content that wastes just as much of our lives. We look at why disgust is the worst possible tool for thinking, why some machine-made explanations are more useful than some human-made ones, what actually separates the harmless from the harmful, and why the question "who made this?" should be replaced with four better questions. There's a confession in here too, from someone who was making slop before machines could. This one gets uncomfortable in places, and it doesn't resolve into a clean answer, because there isn't one. There's a grey zone, and it's worth walking into with the lights on.Read the full article on my website: https://englishpluspodcast.com/the-ai-slop-panic-is-hiding-something-we-already-let-machines-choose-what-we-consume/Send your questions to danny@dannyballan.com
10 AUG 2026 · Somewhere out there is the most gifted person alive at something you love, and you will probably never hear their name. That single unfair fact is the doorway into today's deep dive. We trace the strange journey of the word "brand" from a burn mark on the side of a cow to the operating system of the modern self, and we pin down the watershed moment when who you are stopped being the reward for good work and started being the entry ticket to it. We talk about Tom Peters and "the brand called you," the attention economy and its poverty of focus, and why publishers now ask novelists how many followers they have before they ask what the book is about. This is not a rant against the modern world, and it is not a nostalgia trip either. It is an honest look at what we genuinely gained when identity became currency, and the quieter, harder-to-name things we handed over in exchange. If you make anything, sell anything, or simply exist online, this one is about the water you are swimming in. Stick around to the end for questions worth arguing about at dinner.Read the full editorial on the website: https://englishpluspodcast.com/the-brand-called-you-when-who-you-are-started-beating-what-you-do/
3 AUG 2026 · Before we can talk about artificial intelligence, we have to talk about the machine we already built. This episode traces the design history of modern education: the tablet houses of ancient Sumer, the anxiety Socrates had about writing, the Chinese exams that invented high-stakes testing, the medieval lecture that existed because books were scarce, the Prussian model that gave us age-graded classrooms, and the Industrial Revolution that gave us bells, rows, and batch processing. Then we look at the strangest fact in education: the world has reorganized itself four or five times since 1900, and the classroom has stayed almost exactly where it was.
3 AUG 2026 · You know the face. The little tilt of the head, the soft and sorrowful eyes, the gentle "you really should get out more" delivered like a diagnosis. It usually shows up the moment someone learns you'd rather read, write, learn, and chase ideas than do whatever counts as "really living" this season. In this episode, we sit with that face for a while. Not to fight it, and not to fire back with pity of our own, but to ask an honest question: why does a full, contented, curious life make some people so uncomfortable that they feel the need to grieve on your behalf? We talk about the great "enjoyment audit" we've all silently agreed to, what a full life actually weighs, why not having the answers might be the most honest thing a person can admit, the awkward truth about money, and the one and only kind of life that genuinely deserves our sympathy. No lectures, no superiority, and definitely no telling you how to live. Just a cozy, thoughtful conversation about the difference between living your life and performing someone else's. Come sit with this one. There's room.
31 JUL 2026 · What if there is no policy solution to this question that doesn't require us to make genuine tradeoffs between values we all hold — and what if the measure of our seriousness about this issue is precisely our willingness to sit with that difficulty rather than retreat to comfortable certainties? We have been traveling for ten episodes now. From the clay tablets of ancient Mesopotamia to the FOSTA-SESTA debate in the US Congress. From the hetaerae of Athens to OnlyFans. From the comfort women of the Imperial Japanese Army to the survivor-led advocacy organizations working today. This has been a serious history of a serious subject, and I hope that by this point, if the series has done its job, you have a sense of why serious engagement with this history matters. Now comes the hardest part: what do we do with it?The Four Models: A Clear-Eyed Overview
31 JUL 2026 · What happens when an industry that has been managed through physical geography for five thousand years suddenly loses its geography — when a brothel is a website, a street is an app, and the transaction can happen across continents? This is the question that the digital transformation posed to every institution that had ever tried to regulate, control, benefit from, or protect people in commercial sex — law enforcement, public health systems, anti-trafficking organizations, feminist activists, civil liberties lawyers, and the people in the industry themselves. And the honest answer, which will be familiar to anyone who has watched the internet transform any other industry, is: nobody has figured it out yet.We are now in the present — or close enough to it that the debates are live and the consequences are immediate. Everything we've built in the previous nine episodes — the entire history of how societies have tried to manage the business of sex — is now being run through the solvent of digital technology. Some things are dissolving. Some things are proving remarkably resistant to dissolution. And some entirely new problems are being created that have no historical precedent. Before FOSTA-SESTA: The Internet's Wild West PeriodBefore we discuss the legislation that changed everything, it's worth understanding what the landscape looked like before it.From roughly the mid-1990s through 2018, the internet created something genuinely new in the history of commercial sex: the ability for individuals to advertise and screen clients independently, without the need for a third-party organizer. Online classified sites — Craigslist's "adult services" section, Backpage, a range of international equivalent platforms — allowed people working in commercial sex to post advertisements, communicate with potential clients before meeting them, screen clients by requiring advance information or references, and share safety information with each other in online forums and networks. From a safety and harm reduction perspective, this was a significant improvement over the street-level alternative for the people using it effectively. Research consistently found that people working independently through online advertising experienced lower rates of violence than people working on the street. The ability to pre-screen clients, to communicate in advance of meeting, to share warnings about violent or exploitative individuals through peer networks — these were real protections that the digital environment enabled.Trafficking networks also used these platforms. This is not in question. The same technology that enabled independent workers to advertise safely also enabled traffickers to advertise for the people they controlled. Backpage, in particular, became the subject of sustained law enforcement and advocacy attention for its facilitation of trafficking advertisements, ultimately leading to its founders facing federal criminal charges and its seizure in 2018.The policy challenge — and this is genuinely difficult — is that the same platform feature that protects an independent worker also enables a trafficker. The ability to post an anonymous advertisement doesn't know who is posting it. Regulating the platform to reduce trafficking also reduces protection for independent workers. This is a real tradeoff, not a rhetorical one.FOSTA-SESTA: The Law That Made Things WorseIn April 2018, the United States Congress passed FOSTA-SESTA — the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act and the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act. The legislation modified Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which had historically provided broad immunity to online platforms for the content their users posted, to remove that immunity for cases involving sex trafficking. It made platforms legally liable for content that "facilitated sex trafficking" — without clearly defining what that meant — and criminalized the use of a computer to "promote or facilitate prostitution."The legislation was supported by a broad coalition: anti-trafficking organizations, conservative religious groups, feminist activists who opposed commercial sex, and major tech companies who calculated that the public relations benefit of appearing to fight trafficking outweighed the legal risk of the legislation. It was opposed by civil liberties organizations, sex workers' rights advocates, harm reduction advocates, and many researchers who predicted that it would harm vulnerable people while doing little to address actual trafficking. The predictions of the opposition proved accurate.Within days of FOSTA-SESTA passing, the online platforms that had provided safety infrastructure for people in the industry shut down their adult services sections — not because they were caught trafficking, but because the legal ambiguity of the new law made the risk of keeping these sections open too great. Backpage was seized. Craigslist removed its personals section. A cascade of smaller platforms disappeared. The online safety networks that sex workers had built over two decades — the client-screening systems, the safety information forums, the peer networks — were disrupted or destroyed. The people who had been working safely through online platforms did not stop working. They moved back to the street, or to less-regulated platforms with less safety infrastructure, or to situations of greater dependency on third parties who could provide what the online platforms no longer could. Research conducted in the years following FOSTA-SESTA found increases in violence against sex workers in multiple American cities. Studies found that the legislation had not produced a measurable reduction in trafficking. The law had made vulnerable people less safe without meaningfully addressing the exploitation it claimed to target.Survivors of trafficking themselves were split on the legislation — some felt it was a necessary intervention, others felt it had destroyed tools they depended on for safety. This split is itself instructive: the category "sex trafficking survivor" is not a politically uniform group with unified interests, and legislation that treats it as one tends to serve the most politically visible voices within it rather than the most structurally vulnerable ones.OnlyFans and the Creator EconomyIf FOSTA-SESTA represents the failure mode of internet-era commercial sex policy, OnlyFans represents something more ambiguous and more interesting.OnlyFans, a subscription content platform founded in 2016, became genuinely significant in the commercial sex ecosystem during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, when the combination of economic disruption, lockdowns, and increased screen time created both supply and demand. The platform allows creators to charge subscribers for access to content — including sexually explicit content — with the platform taking a 20% commission. What OnlyFans represented for many people who used it was something genuinely different from previous commercial sex economics: direct creator-to-consumer relationships, content that the creator controlled and owned, income that went primarily to the creator rather than to a third-party organizer, and the ability to work from home without physical contact. For people with existing social capital — social media followers, online presence, marketing skills, access to technology — it offered a degree of economic independence that had been largely unavailable in the previous commercial sex economy. But it also reproduced some of the oldest dynamics in the industry in new forms. The platform's income distribution is highly unequal — a small number of top creators earn substantial income while the majority earn very little. The demographic profile of top earners reflects existing social advantages: social media presence, physical characteristics privileged by mainstream culture, marketing skills, access to quality equipment. The platform economy's winner-take-most dynamics applied to this market as they apply to every other. The people who needed economic alternatives most urgently — people with the fewest existing social advantages — benefited least from the platform. In August 2021, OnlyFans announced it would ban sexually explicit content, citing pressure from its banking partners and payment processors — and then reversed that decision within a week, citing the opposition of its creator community. The episode revealed something important: the financial infrastructure of the internet economy — banks, payment processors, hosting companies — exercises enormous de facto regulatory power over online commercial sex through its policies and risk aversion, operating without the accountability or transparency of formal legislation. The Technology Companies and Their Complicated RoleThe major technology companies occupy a deeply uncomfortable position in the landscape of commercial sex in the digital age.On one hand, platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter have explicit policies against sexually explicit content and against content that facilitates commercial sex. These policies are enforced through content moderation systems that are inconsistent, often opaque, and that sex workers consistently report apply more harshly to them than to other users. On the other hand, the same companies generate significant advertising and engagement revenue from sexual content in various forms — content that rides up to the line of their explicit policies and sometimes over it, and that drives substantial user engagement. The platform's financial interest in engagement and the platform's stated content policies are in tension, and the tension is resolved differently depending on who the user is, how many...
30 JUL 2026 · If you wanted to build a business that generates enormous profit from other people's bodies, that is extraordinarily resistant to law enforcement, and that reliably replenishes its own labor supply — what would it look like? Because that business exists, and understanding its mechanics is the first step toward dismantling it.This episode is different from the others in this series. We are stepping back from the historical narrative to examine something more structural: how commercial sex exploitation actually works as a business, across time and across different legal environments. We are going to look at recruitment, control, profit extraction, and the specific economic logic that makes this industry so persistent.I want to be clear about something before we start: not everyone who works in commercial sex is being exploited in the trafficking sense. Some people make genuinely autonomous choices to work in this industry and have the actual freedom to make and revise those choices. Those people exist, and their autonomy deserves respect. This episode is not about them, though the policy questions it raises affect them directly. This episode is about the business model of exploitation — and that is a different, darker thing.Recruitment: How People Enter the Industry Against Their Will
