The legacy of Southgate Street School

  • Episode 1: The School that did not become a parking lot

14 OCT 2023 · "The Legacy of Southgate Street School" explores the rich history of a significant educational institution in Newport, Kentucky. Established in 1873, the school served as a beacon of hope for African-American children during segregation, offering them quality education despite facing numerous challenges, such as using discarded books from white schools. Although it ceased operations in 1955 due to the U.S. Supreme Court's desegregation order, the building's story didn't end there. It temporarily became a hub for illicit activities before almost being demolished for a parking lot. However, thanks to the dedication of its alumni and the community, the school was saved, preserving its legacy as a symbol of resilience, community pride, and educational empowerment.
