This episode provides a comprehensive biography of Tiberius, the second emperor of Rome, tracing his journey from a distinguished military leader to a reclusive and paranoid ruler. It details his complex relationship with his stepfather, Augustus, and the series of family deaths that eventually forced him into a position of power he appeared reluctant to hold. The text highlights his administrative competence and early adherence to Republican values, while also examining the deterioration of his reign following his self-imposed exile to the island of Capri. Central to the narrative is the rise and fall of the ambitious Sejanus, whose influence fueled Tiberius's suspicions and led to a surge in treason trials and political executions. Ultimately, the source weighs Tiberius's reputation for generosity and moderation against historical accounts of his late-life cruelty and isolation. This overview presents a nuanced look at a man caught between his traditionalist principles and the heavy burdens of an emerging imperial dynasty.
