  • Yasuke - The Forgotten African Samurai

21 MAR 2024 · Samurai stand as iconic representations of Japan's cultural legacy, and it's commonly believed that they were exclusively Japanese. However, historical records reveal instances of foreigners attaining the esteemed status of samurai. Among the notable cases from the West is that of William Adams, an English navigator who arrived in Japan in 1600 and climbed the social ladder to become a samurai. Equally compelling is the story of Yasuke, an African man who was elevated to the rank of samurai by the esteemed Japanese lord Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582), serving as his personal guard.  Yasuke arrived in Japan in 1579, brought over by Jesuit missionaries, and quickly caught the eye of Nobunaga, leading to his remarkable ascent within Japanese feudal society.

This narrative stems from the real-life account of Eustache Dauger. As years passed, this story transformed into legend, and eventually, the legend morphed into myth, captivating imaginations through countless retellings in children's literature, novels, and films worldwide. Archival Remnants of the Man in the Iron Mask Our understanding of Eustache Dauger primarily originates from the exchanges between his captor, Bénigne Dauvergne de Saint-Mars, and the Parisian authorities. Details about Dauger's life before his incarceration, including the reasons for his arrest and the origins of his mask, are scant. Interestingly, historical records do not support the notion that the mask was iron, but suggest it was made of black velvet instead. The myth of the iron mask likely evolved from later embellishments of the story.
