Description
In the third Scroll of The Scrolls of Reflection, Zaib Shamsi explores the relationship between stress, adaptation, resilience and the hidden physiological cost of remaining functional under sustained pressure. Drawing...
show moreDrawing on the concept of allostasis — the process through which the body maintains stability by adapting to changing demands — Zaib examines what happens when periods of stress are repeatedly followed by more stress, with increasingly little opportunity for recovery.
Why can someone continue working, studying, performing and appearing completely fine while pressure continues to accumulate? Does functioning necessarily mean that we are coping? When does resilience become compensation? And how do we recognise when the demands placed on a system are beginning to exceed its capacity to recover?
Through biology, engineering and lived experience, this Scroll explores allostatic load alongside what Zaib describes as the functioning fallacy: the assumption that if we are still functioning, we must be fine.
It considers the human body as an adaptive system — one capable of absorbing remarkable amounts of pressure, but not without limits. Just as an engineered structure can continue carrying a load while strain accumulates beneath the surface, human performance does not always reveal the internal cost required to maintain it.
The Allostatic Breakpoint is not presented as a medical diagnosis or universal biological threshold. Instead, it is a reflective framework for asking a more difficult question:
Where does useful adaptation end, and unsustainable compensation begin?
Perhaps the question is not simply how much pressure we can tolerate.
Perhaps it is:
What is this pressure costing us to tolerate?

The Scrolls of Reflection Hosted by Zaib Shamsi, Biomedical Engineer. Exploring life through reflection, lived experience, human behaviour, science, engineering and systems thinking — from ambition, resilience and identity to failure, relationships, health, technology and the process of rebuilding. New Scrolls every Monday and Thursday. Scars become blueprints, and the things we stay silent about are given a voice. © Zaib Shamsi. The Scrolls of Reflection. All rights reserved.
