Jimmy Carter, born in Plains, Georgia, in 1924, began life as a peanut farmer and became the 39th President of the United States. After a successful career in the U.S. Navy, he returned to farming, where he modernized his family's peanut farm. Carter entered politics, serving in the Georgia Senate and eventually becoming the Governor of Georgia in 1971.In 1976, he won the Democratic nomination for President and narrowly defeated the incumbent President Gerald Ford in the general election.
