Can a Christian possess wealth without being possessed by it? In Sermon on the Mount Part 26, Straight Bible continues through Matthew 6:19–24 and examines Jesus’ warning: “You cannot serve God and mammon.” The study begins in Genesis 14 with Abram’s rescue of Lot and his encounter with two kings offering two very different paths. Melchizedek, the mysterious king of Salem and priest of God Most High, brings bread, wine, and a heavenly blessing. The King of Sodom offers Abram earthly riches. Although Abram had legitimately recovered the spoils of war, he refuses to keep anything belonging to Sodom so no man could claim, “I made Abram rich.” What does Abraham’s decision teach us about uncertain riches, spiritual inheritance, generosity, and storing treasure in heaven? The discussion then moves to 2 Kings 5 and the healing of Naaman. Elisha refuses Naaman’s silver, gold, and clothing, but Gehazi secretly pursues the reward. His choice reveals how quickly the love of money can produce deception, greed, and spiritual destruction. In 1 Kings 18, Elijah confronts Israel with another divided-loyalty question: If the Lord is God, follow Him—but if Baal, follow him. This confrontation reveals a powerful connection between serving Baal in the Old Testament and serving mammon in the New Testament. The hosts also examine Simon the sorcerer attempting to purchase the gift of God in Acts 8, Ananias and Sapphira lying about money in Acts 5, and Jesus’ parable of the unjust steward in Luke 16. These passages challenge Christians to consider whether money is their servant or their master. Can the modern church operate with God but without money? What are the “true riches” Jesus promises? Are we faithfully using temporary resources for eternal purposes—or allowing covetousness to control us?
