A third of nurses in the UK are considering leaving the profession due to burnout and exhaustion as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. There are already 40,000 vacancies in England alone – despite the Conservatives’ manifesto pledge to add another 50,000 nurses to the workforce. So what’s being done to support health workers, and encourage more people to join the NHS?

In this episode of the Sky News Daily Podcast, host Jayne Secker speaks to Anthony Johnson, a nurse in London, about the effects the COVID-19 crisis has had on him; and Rachael Browning, who’s in charge of nurse recruitment at the Warrington NHS Trust. We also hear the story of Mike Lawton, who’s swapping the intensive care unit in Bristol for a job in Australia.
