In Modeste Mignon, we follow the journey of a young provincial woman with a romantic spirit who believes she has fallen for the illustrious Parisian poet Melchior de Canalis. Unbeknownst to her, Melchior is indifferent to her affections. Instead, he enlists his secretary, Ernest de la Brière, to handle the situation. Ernest, posing as Canalis, begins to respond to Modestes letters and plays the role of her lover. The plot thickens when Ernest learns that Modeste is a wealthy heiress.
