IL PIÙ GRANDE ITALIANO DI CUI SAPETE TROPPO POCO

Pizzoferrato, paese di montagna di poco più di mille anime, provincia di Chieti. Sono tempi duri, anzi durissimi: la fame è tanta, l'oppressione nazifascista spezza vite, speranze e vieta sogni. Un 15enne gracilino parte insieme ai genitori per gli Stati Uniti: sembra una storia come tante, di valigie di cartone, di quando gli emigrati eravamo noi. E invece questo è l'inizio di una storia speciale, è il primo capitolo dell'ascesa di Bruno Leopoldo Francesco Sammartino, il più grande sportivo italiano di cui non avete mai sentito parlare.
Sammartino è stato per decenni una leggenda vivente e da un anno, dopo essersi spento per cause naturali all'età di 82 anni il 18 aprile a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, è una leggenda e basta. Di mestiere faceva il wrestler e negli States è considerato il più grande di tutti i tempi della sua disciplina.
Qualche numero per inquadrare la grandezza del personaggio. Durante gli incontri di Sammartino il Madison Square Garden ha fatto registrare il tutto esaurito 188 volte: in questa speciale classifica il secondo è fermo a quota 44. Altro dato fuori da ogni logica è il numero di giorni in cui Sammartino è rimasto campione della più famosa federazione di wrestling del mondo, la Wwwf (oggi Wwe): 4040. Nessuno come lui.
Nel 1987, dopo tre decenni di successi e una carriera irripetibile, l'abruzzese passò idealmente il testimone a colui che di di fatto diventò il suo erede, un certo Hulk Hogan. I due fecero coppia in un incontro che - manco a dirlo - vinsero.
Proprio Hulk Hogan è forse il wrestler più popolare in Italia o almeno lo è stato a cavallo tra gli anni '80 e '90. L'ultimo ventennio ha visto salire alla ribalta un altro performer, John Cena, ancora oggi l'idolo dei fan italiani che seguono uno sport che nel nostro Paese, dopo il boom di ascolti in tv tra il 2005 e il 2006, sta vivendo un lungo periodo di letargo in termini di interesse.
La crisi del wrestling in Italia nasce da un malinteso, che probabilmente è lo stesso che ha fatto perdere le tracce di Sammartino nella memoria collettiva: la maggior parte delle persone non si lascia nemmeno incuriosire dagli incontri perché "sono finti". Ma non è proprio così. Infatti il wrestling, che è uno sport-intrattenimento, è predeterminato nel risultato ma non per questo una baracconata. I lottatori sono atleti straordinari, capaci di azioni spettacolari e mosse che lasciano senza fiato. La World wrestling entertainment, la federazione che fu di Sammartino è una multinazionale miliardaria che trasmette i propri show in tutto il mondo. L'evento più importante dell'anno, Wrestlemania, è tra i più seguiti del pianeta e per fatturato è dietro soltanto a quattro o cinque avvenimenti sportivi (la classifica varia di anno in anno) come i mondiali di calcio e il Super Bowl.
Al netto del giudizio che si può dare sul wrestling, resta il fatto che Sammartino è uno degli sportivi italiani più apprezzati nel mondo. Per intere generazioni ha rappresentato un modello da seguire, la realizzazione del sogno americano. Durante i suoi incontri a New York veniva incitato da migliaia di persone arrivate in quella terra dall'Italia, dal Messico, dall'Irlanda, dal Sud America, dall'Olanda e da chissà quanti altri luoghi. Bruno è stato un esempio di forza sul ring, un uomo e un immigrato benvoluto e rispettato.
Nel 2013 è stato introdotto nella hall of fame della Wwe dal suo amico fraterno Arnold Schwarzenegger. In Italia a lui è dedicata soltanto una statua, a Pizzoferrato, il paese natale in cui volle tornare, commosso e travolto dai ricordi, pochi mesi prima di morire.
