The inner event that awakens Kundalini remains a mystery. In Margaret Dempsey’s case, years of Buddhist meditation, galvanized by a traumatic contact with an attractive man, triggered the “uprising of Shakti.” Her honesty in not attempting to glamorize the awakening attests to its authenticity. The author’s real Self, to which Kundalini eventually brought her, is in evidence from page one, as she describes her upbringing in Catholic Ireland, her days in a boarding school run by nuns, her training as a nurse, and her escape to London, New York and India.

An interesting interview. McConnell’s Respectful, yet probing questions helped to clarify, though a somewhat uncomfortable listen at times because of the confrontational nature of the host who was a bit impatient with her long rambling explanations. He was obviously trying to make this poor woman be more concise and logical when all she wanted to do was speak her truth of the moment. The heart wants what it wants, or else it doesn’t care. She is like a person in love. She is “happy” - how can you dissect that? It is almost always right to promote your own truth, and it is almost always wrong to denigrate someone else’s. Still, the dialogue brought up some issues that made me think and question just what it means to be enlightened. I feel that the value of having what I would call an "enlightened master" (and I don’t feel Adi Da is the “one and only 7th degree enlightened being ever on Earth as his devotees feel he is) is that one who truly wishes to realize their Self has an insurmountable obstacle: the separate selfish self that is the ”lower self.” We are incapable of objectively seeing ourselves. An enlightened master has transcended the ego and is perfectly established in the Godhead. He or she is a perfect mirror, radiating unselfish, divine love and truth, which eventually annihilates the ego, if one is willing to undergo the process. Can someone achieve this without an enlightened master? It appears that only very rarely is this possible.
