Charles Manson masterminded the gruesome Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969, he took his place among America's most notorious criminals. In his satirical novel, Chuckin' Chuck: The Astonishing Tale of Charles Manson Pitching in the Major Leagues (published by AuthorHouse) Mike Seid uses his slightly twisted sense of humor to bring this aged murderer back into the spotlight-this time with an unexpected knack for knuckleballs. Seid begins the novel inside the walls of Corcoran State Prison in California. A tense game of baseball unfolds between two prison teams. The pitcher on the mound is none other than Manson. As he strikes out another batter with his amazing knuckleball, a pale skinny visitor watches from the stands. Seth White, the newest intern for the New England Mavericks takes out his cell phone and makes a call that changes America's favorite pastime forever. The Mavericks' owner, Hugh J. Winbaugh III, prides himself on leaving no stone unturned in his hunt for players. He knows Manson could be his ticket to the World Series, especially after his proud team failed to make the playoffs last season for the first time in over a decade. He orchestrates a shady deal with prison staff to spring Manson, and the pint-sized icon of evil becomes the Mavericks' star pitcher. Readers follow Manson and the Mavericks from spring training camp in Miami to New England and across the country. As Manson assimilates to life on the outside and his rise to fame, protestors come out of the woodwork. Leading the fight is a group of Pete Rose supporters who dub themselves the Peteniks. Their mantra is "At least Pete never killed anyone!" As the season barrels toward the World Series, Manson's stardom raises the ire of a leading crime reporter. The hard-charging reporter makes it her mission to stop the insanity, but the Mavericks are poised to ride "Chuck Mann's" golden arm straight to the World Series. Seid fills the novel with supporting characters that range from ridiculous to somewhat noble, and outrageous human flaws abound. With sharp wit and a warped sense of humor, Seid addresses the criminal behavior that has become commonplace in sports and the irresistible attraction Americans have for the macabre. - www.chuckinchuck.com
