The Mafia Exposed - Criminal Landmarks of Sicily - Mafia Exposed takes you to key locations that mark events in the history of the Sicilian Mafia as it has developed since the mid-19th century. It offers brief glimpses of the malavita that thrives in dark alleys hidden from the bright Mediterranean sun. The provocative nature of this project is not a condemnation of the great people of Sicily. On the contrary, it is written in a spirit of solidarity with the brave individuals-private citizens and police agents alike-who make up the anti-Mafia movement. The aim is to demystify and strip away the romance of the Cosa Nostra, an institutional phenomenon better perceived as "mafias," separate but collaborative crime "families" that control discrete regions of the island. Carl Russo is a San Francisco Bay Area native who has written for the Oakland Tribune, Indiewire and other publications. Russo fell in love with Sicily on his first trip to the island in 1999 and has returned many times since. In 2010, he began a blog, Mafia Exposed, which became the basis for his book. Russo was also a radio producer and disc jockey at KUSF-FM, San Francisco, from 1990 to 2003. The self-described cinema freak made a comic short in 2005 called Baby Pepper, which screened at 48 film festivals in 13 countries. - www.mafiaexposed.com
