Happy to hear your two cents. I do think this business about "upmarket" fiction is essentially an excuse to justify focusing on genre fiction. But the publishers are dying on the vine because the digital world doesnt require middlemen, tastemakers, or gatekeepers. What effect this will have on literature I have no idea, but I have to say there are still some good stories being told.

Yes, I assumed it was Grapes of Wrath too. My own thinking is that you're talking about two different things. The enormity of the villain can create suspense, tension, but readers are more concerned about the character's fate (rather than the quest itself) when they care about the protagonist. What do you mean by the "reorientation of popular books?"
