A talk on the way that national origin myths, whether rooted in prehistory, religion or modern science, inform and consolidate collective identities. I explain why different peoples in medieval times thought their ancestors were Trojans, Hebrews or Scythians. I also explain why I am against, what I call "mushroom nationalism" and that this fake version of history, far from fortifying identity, is ultimately harmful to it.
Speech delivered in USA December 2018.
