Bhakti as a form of worship attains fruition only when there is no trace of egoism or ostentation of any kind, said Sri Muralidhara Swamigal in a discourse. Narada, visiting the earth at the dawn of Kali Yuga, is disappointed with the prevailing pitiable state of affairs. .
There is a total lack of bhakti and virtues in the way of life of the people. He decides to withdraw from the world, but is advised by Sanatkumara to continue to propagate the quality of selfless devotion through Sat Sanga, Hari Nama Samkirtana, etc. This echoes the advice of Krishna who initiates people to continue their duties without expecting any reward.
Association with the devout is the only antidote to samsara for the people in Kali Yuga. When a true devotee sings the glory of the Lord, gets involved in Sat Sanga and engages in acts of worship and service to the Lord and His devotees, he does all this because of his devotion. It slowly becomes clear to him that if devotion is instilled in people when he is involved in these efforts, it is only because of God’s grace. Such is the power of divine will and also of individual karma.
God looks for true devotion in any Sat Sanga and is personally present only in such places where there is true love. To forget oneself in the experience of God is the hallmark of true devotion. This is what happens to Tondaradipodi Azhwar when he is drawn to experience the archa form of the deity of Ranganatha. He does not sing with an audience in mind, nor does he desire name or fame. But his entire being brims with a soul-stirring experience that overflows from his heart and mind to inspire true devotion among many in search of salvation.
