One of my favorite sources for thought starters is Fred Rogers. His little book, “The World According to Mr. Rogers,” is a real gem. Here’s what Mr. Rogers has to say about being strong:

“When I was a boy I used to think that strong meant having big muscles, great physical power; but the longer I live, the more I realize that strength has much more to do with what is not seen. Real strength has to do with helping others.”

Antoine de St. Exupery writes in “The Little Prince,” “The eyes are blind. One must look with the heart.”

The real source of strength lies in our ability to put ourselves in another’s place. That’s called empathy, and it is the source of everything that is good and kind in this world. It is what underlies the golden rule—do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If we are unable to make a connection with others, everything falls apart.

Today, in school, make an effort to see with your heart, to feel what your friends or neighbors are feeling, and be strong in the way that really matters.
