In this episode, Ann Hoffman PT, DScPT, PCS, discusses plagiocephaly (flat-head), which occurs when developing babies continually hold their head in a preferred position without turning their head. The weight of the head provides pressure that causes flatness. Early detection and treatment are the best ways to prevent flat-head, but once it occurs, many useful exercises and procedures can be utilized to correct it. In regard to the concussion, the best course of action is to do everything possible to prevent them by wearing safety helmets and equipment for sports participation and in other activities such as riding a bike or scooter.
Dr. Hoffman received her physical therapy degree in her home state of Minnesota. She completed her undergraduate and Masters of Art in Physical Therapy from the College of St. Scholastica in 1992 in Duluth Minnesota. Her family and career have taken her from Chicago, to Minneapolis/St. Paul as she was employed by Shriners Hospital for Children and then to Mayo Clinic in Rochester for 13 years. In 2013, her family relocated to Utah and she worked for a short time with Primary Children’s Hospital before accepting a faculty position in 2014 with Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Dr. Hoffman continues to see pediatric patients at 2 different clinics in the area.
