The above inspirational quote often reminds the young emcee, Jay Gathers (aka 4G), that everyone has a
story and a purpose in life. For 4G, impacting the world is that purpose. At an early age, 4G knew that music
has a special power that enhances his already God-given ability, which is to reach out and touch the hearts
of listeners through the art of rocking the microphone. Utilizing quick metaphors and prolific penmanship,
music became his weapon of choice to battle a difficult childhood and family dysfunction. By embracing the
sounds of music, a sense of freedom & a sense of escape was created. It was that universal beat of his
ancestors that took him to that safe place.
For a time, 4G had been in the rotation of the infamous foster care system, until one day his elderly
Grandmother took him in. While in the loving care of his family’s matriarch, Gospel music found him. This
spiritual genre of music was not only the perfect fit for his purpose, but it would soon become the message
that would release him from his childhood pain, and embark him on a journey of love and forgiveness, which
began with his parents.
Whether we call it the path of reconciliation, the road to redemption, or the highway of success, this journey
has always truly been the stairway to heaven and while climbing these stairs, 4G has embraced the culture
and influence created by some of the industry’s most prolific artists such as Lecrae, Kirk Franklin, Yolanda
Adams, Sounds of Blackness, BeBe and CeCe Winans, just to name a few. This influence has gifted him
the foundation and structure needed for his debut album, “Delayed, But Not Denied”.
The development of 4G’s sound as an inspirational Gospel emcee has taken no time due to experience,
which is life’s greatest teacher, properly preparing him for what is next to come. Although, it may have taken
some time to tell his story, 4G never gave up on his truth and now he is ready to be the message that the
