In 2004, Major Margaret Witt’s unit was headed off to war in the Middle East, but the decorated flight nurse was told she could not go. Major Witt was told that she would be discharged because someone had told her superiors that she was gay. Major Whitt filed suit against the air force, and won the case, eventually dismantling “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Major Witt, who now lives in Portland, has co-written a book about her life called Tell: Love, Defiance, and the Military Trial at the Tipping Point for Gay Rights.”
