This fall, Portland Public School District publicly apologized to the community of talented and gifted student families at the ACCESS Academy after the district first announced it would disband the program in favor or serving those students in neighborhood schools. Less than a month later, the district announced it would shutter the special education program at Pioneer School to locate the ACCESS program there, and provide services to the special ed students elsewhere. Parents of Pioneer students say School serves special education students with highly specialized needs. PPS Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero joins us, along with Mary Pearson, oversees Special Education. We are also joined by Karin Dean, whose son attends the Pioneer School, and Cory Wellington, a teacher at Pioneer School.
