show moreStudents around the country have gone on strike for climate change action today for the second time this year.
It's part of a worldwide protest by students demanding more action by lawmakers.
Protests included a lie-in on Auckland's Queen Street, tree planting in Waihi and a march and rally in Wellington.
Handford says a round 15,000 to 16,000 youth turned out in protest today.
She says says they had two clear demands.
The first was for all parties to support an ambitious Zero Carbon Bill - with a target for net zero emission by 2040, instead of 2050.
Handford adds the other demand was for the Government to declare a climate emergency.
