Waimate could soon have an Energy-from-Waste plant.
South Island Resource Recovery is looking into the viability of building this plant near the South Canterbury town which would burn rubbish in order to generate power.
The mayor of Weymouth, says that the proposal could create many benefits for the district.
Director on the board, Paul Taylor says they’re planning to process 350,000 tonnes through the facility, which is about a third of the waste currently going into landfill in the South Island.
