The hospitality industry wants extended opening hours for all major events.
Justice Minister Andrew Little will introduce an amendment to the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act.
It would allow licensed premises longer hours during Rugby World Cup matches.
But Hospitality New Zealand's Nadine Mehlhopt says a blanket allowance makes sense.
"This obviously is not the first time we've been in this position and we certainly don't want to be here every four years or any time there's a Football World Cup or any other kind of major event."
