Those protesting against Myanmar's military coup are being beaten and peppered with rubber bullets.
Hundreds of thousands of protestors have been on the streets, with coup leaders ordering troops to forcefully disperse marchers in Mandalay.
Myanmar's military has warned anti-coup protesters across the country that they could face up to 20 years in prison if they obstruct the armed forces.
Guardian reporter Michael Safi told Kate Hawkesby the use of force has become harsher in the past few days.
"There have also been reports of arrests in the middle of the night and threats to cut off the internet.
"Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi remains detained on trumped-up charges." 
Safi said the atmosphere is becoming very tense as troops increase their use of force.
"The army is known for using violence, which has been compared to genocide in parts of the country."
