As a parent you always want what's best for your child.
So, if they are diagnosed to be on the autistic spectrum, it can be a scary time for some.
One dilemma parents face is whether children have a right to know about their diagnosis.
Would it do more harm than good, affecting their self-esteem?
Or, will it give them better understanding of themselves.
Frian Wadia is an early intervention specialist at Autism NZ, and is a parent of children on the autistic spectrum.
She told Kate Hawkesby children deserve to know their diagnosis, but it must be done in the right way.
“Absolutely, every child deserves to know if they do have a diagnosis. But, think it’s really important how you convey that.”
