This week on the Huskie Conversation Cafe, your host J Pappas (they/them) is joined by Northern Illinois University professor and author of Humanity’s Last Stand: Confronting Global Catastrophe, Dr. Mark Schuller (he/him/his).

In the first of two episodes of this interview, J and Mark discuss writing a book on major global events amidst a pandemic, a civil rights uprising, and national and global unrest, the process of writing a book like a long-form blog, and how the book has been received in its one month of publication.

On Humanity’s Last Stand:
“Surveying the struggles of disenfranchised peoples around the globe from frontline communities affected by climate change, to #BlackLivesMatter activists, to Indigenous water protectors, to migrant communities facing increasing hostility, anthropologist Mark Schuller argues that we must develop radical empathy in order to move beyond simply identifying as “allies” and start acting as “accomplices.” Bringing together the insights of anthropologists and activists from many cultures, this timely study shows us how to stand together and work toward a more inclusive vision of humanity before it’s too late.” -Rutger’s University Press
