Baby farming was a popular practice in Victorian Britain, when contraception wasn't invented and single mothers were unable to feed, clothe or keep a roof over their children's heads due to living in impoverished conditions. As well as a lack of contraception, social services also hadn't been formulated at the time, which contributed to baby farming origniating in the first place. At the end of the day, baby farming must've seemed like the only option to mothers who were unable to provide a safe and stable home and life for their children.
