This week I speak to Andy Stanley, senior pastor of North Point Community Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Andy founded the church over 20 years ago and today it is the largest congregation in America, according to Outreach Magazine.

I talk to Andy about his experience growing up Christian, his interest in people's stories, including deconversion stories, and how Christians can be their own worst enemies. We even chat for a minute about politics and how evangelicals might be able to salvage their integrity after this election.

While we differ on many issues, we agree that serving the needs of humanity is paramount and something religious and non-religious people can engage in together.

My question, which was admitedly rambling and off the top of my head, was, what criteria does Andy use to determin better and worse versions of Christianity. I suspect that it is a baseline humanism/philiosphical reason, as you suggest, that actually trumps the Bible. When interpretations of the Bible conflict with our best understanding of ethics, we go with philosophical ethics, unless one is a fundamentalist. Andy was talking about "versions of Christianity" that are toxic. I of course, agree that there are better and worse versions of Christianity. I was just trying to understand what tools or resources he draws on in making those determinations.

Kinda surprised at the "long" question about 25 minutes in, about tools for teaching ethics. I draw on the last 500 years of philosophy, but most of it just confirms what I picked up in my stable home and decent education. The major insight I found was that it was not based Judeo-Christian scripture. Did I miss something? Did you miss a follow up question?
