Leslie is joined by John O'Grady, President of AFGE Council 238, which represents over 9,000 U.S. EPA employees nationwide, including environmental protection specialists, engineers, and scientists.

The two discuss tomorrow's National "Save the U.S. EPA Day” Press Conference.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is slated for a minimum seven percent (7%) funding reduction which, when adjusted for inflation, would be the lowest funding for the agency since the Reagan Administration.

The proposed 2018 budget for the EPA, if passed, would result in the elimination of the Office of Environmental Justice, the Office of Public Engagement, and all 14 climate voluntary partnership programs. In addition, it also would slash state grants, cut geographic programs, and eliminate funding for science and technology programs by 14 percent.

Communities will suffer as funding is cut for the recovery and relief from hurricanes and other natural disasters; the cleanup of superfund sites, geographical programs in Lake Champlain; Long Island Sound, San Francisco Bay and South Florida; and for the implementation of the Clean Power Plan, Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, Energy Star Program and Global Change Research.

“Long considered one of the world’s leading environmental and human health research organizations, the EPA is already operating at 1989 staffing levels,” said AFGE National Council 238 President, John J. O’Grady, who also serves as the national spokesperson for the Save the U.S. EPA campaign.

“In light of the proposed budget, we are deeply concerned about the ability of the EPA to function as an agency and fulfill our mission – to protect the country’s air, water, land and endangered species,” O’Grady added. “We must do everything we can to safeguard our environment and that starts with fighting this budget every step of the way.”
