show moreLeslie, Brad, and callers discuss a story out of Pine Bush, NY, where the Pledge of Allegiance was read in Arabic during the high school's morning announcements.
Immediately, the outcry began. The Arabic reading of the pledge has "divided the school in half," the District Superintendent told a newspaper.
Leslie and Brad had a passionate debate amongst themselves and callers about whether there's an issue in our culture of prejudice against Arabs and Muslims and the effect that the vilification in the media plays into these stereotypes.
Some questions they posed included:
1. With the diversity we have in our schools in the US, do you feel that the Pledge of Allegiance should be allowed to be recited in different languages?
2. Do you find it disrespectful that Pine Bush High School recited the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic during the morning announcements?
3. The Arabic reading of the Pledge of Allegiance has "divided the school in half," said Pine Bush's superintendent. Would this be the case if it was recited in Spanish? Italian? German?
4. Has the media put us in fear of Arab and Muslim people? Students referenced the war in the Middle East in defense of the pledge being read only in English.
5. Who is to blame for the lack of understanding we have of other cultures in the US?
