Regular contributor on Late Night Health, Greg Celaya, DC, joins us to talk about autoimmune diseases and actually what is autoimmune disease.

Some of the symptoms of autoimmune disease are fatigue, muscle weakness, memory problems, low grade fevers, allergies, swollen glands, inflammation, headaches, digestive problems and many more.

What is an autoimmune disease? Autoimmune diseases is when your body has a weakness that is letting certain proteins into your system that shouldn't be there. Your body then becomes hyper sensitive to those proteins in the future. Your body sees these protein and sends out antibodies against it and your immune system attacks it. These proteins look a lot like the healthy tissue in your body and so when those antibodies attack the protein they sometimes attack the normal tissues in your body as well.

A lot of people are misdiagnosed when they go to the doctor with symptoms. Most doctors do not do the tests needed to isolate an autoimmune disease. There are specific tests that need to be done to properly identify a specific autoimmune disease. Most of the time health insurances companies won't cover these tests, this is why most doctors don't order these tests.

70% of people who have autoimmune disease usually have more than one disease they are dealing with. People who live with un-diagnosed autoimmune disease have a very low quality of life.
