As Louis Kelso and CESJ point out, money fulfills many functions (including as a store and measure of value), but it is far more than "currency." If you understand that "money" is a system of enforceable promises, then you can understand how local banks and the central bank can create new, asset-backed money and interest-free credit for growing the economy in a non-inflationary way and creating an ever-broadening base of capital-owning citizens.
