Books Open Your World
Growing up, I was not much of a reader until I was in my 30s when I started reading fiction books. I read the Bible and other study materials earlier, but not for enjoyment, but to prepare lessons or messages. Once I started reading, and experiencing other people, places, and things, that is to say, other worlds, I was hooked. I have been an avid reader ever since. I especially like space-related science-fiction novels that allow me to travel through time and space to worlds unknown and unexplored. I can experience life outside the confines of my terrestrial home.
In recent years, I have switched almost exclusively to audiobooks that I can listen to while working outside, exercising, or a myriad of other activities to allow my mind to travel. I listen to the books at two times the normal speed, allowing me to absorb content much faster while still being wholly immersed in the story. While not all the books I read or listen to are fiction, I will admit fiction makes up most of my list. I like to step outside of the current business and political world that we are part of and travel in my mind. The non-fiction books, which are usually business or Biblically related, open my mind to thoughts and information that I have not experienced. In the past five years in the audiobooks alone, I have listened to almost two hundred books. I also use podcasts in much the same manner, to learn from other information that can help me in business and ministry.
As our quote, today indicates, books, whether physical or audio, will break through the ice that clogs our minds. It opens up the vast sea of information available to us at our fingertips or in our ears and will expand our horizons beyond anything we can imagine. Open your world and take advantage of the wealth of information found in books. It is always worth the investment.
