"Religious Trappings"
I. Luke 11:1 1. We all need to be taught how to pray 2. Everyone prays James 4:2-3 .... We have not because we ask not, ye ask and receive not because we ask amiss that you may consume it upon your own lusts.
(NLT) ... you don't get it because your motives are all wrong
Matt. 6:1-9
There is a right way and wrong way to pray
vs 5 -- praying to be seen of men
vs 6 -- Pray to the Father? Uncle Joe? St Mark? Jesus' mother?
vs 7 -- Use not vain repetitions
James 5:13-15 "prayer of faith"
I John 5:14-15
Mark 11:24
"IF IT BE THY WILL"
(Matt. 26:36-44)
Dan. 3:16-18
"Not my will, but Thine be done"
James 1:5-8 Wisdom
II . We can't approach the subject of prayer OR How To Pray on Our Own Terms
III. There are different prayers and kinds of prayers for different kinds of situations
Ex. sports
1. Prayer of faith (James 5)
2. Prayer of agreement (Matt. 18:18)
3. New Testament intercession vs old (I Tim. 2:1)
I Tim. 2:1 - supplications; prayers; intercessions and giving of thanks, be made for all men
4. Fasting and prayer (new vs. old)
5. Meditation = a form of prayer
6. The Lord's Prayer = a model of prayer (Matt. 6)
7. Prayer of dedication and consecration (Matt. 26:36-44) (James 5:13)
8. Praying in the Spirit (Jude)
