Vitamin D is often called a fat-soluble vitamin, but technically it's a hormone.

Vitamin D receptors are in nearly every cell in humans, also many animals. And so is the ability to produce an active form of vitamin D. Whether we get vitamin D through food, supplements, or via sunlight, vitamin D has not yet been activated.
