MESSAGE NOTES:
The Story of Saul –
God has placed inside of us LEGITIMATE NEEDS
Identity – We are children of God
Security – Emotional, Physical, & Eternal
Intimacy – Emotional, Physical, & Spiritual
Companionship – Divine & Human
Purpose – Fulfilling Work
Legacy – Fruit

Our culture makes us believe that having these needs makes us week and looks to fill them with their substitutes.

John Eldredge Wrote:
To find God, you must look with all your heart. To remain present to God, you must remain present to your heart. To hear His voice, you must listen with all your heart. To love Him, you must love with all your heart. You cannot be the person God meant you to be, and you cannot live the life He meant you to live, unless you live from the heart.

The Enemy’s plan from the beginning was to assault the heart… Make them so busy they ignore the heart. Wound them so deeply they don’t want a heart. Twist their theology so they despise the heart. Take away their courage. Destroy their creativity. Make intimacy with God impossible for them.

The heart = Your Faith
What happens when these needs are not truly met?

Our emotions are to be treated as gauges, not guides

They are to report to you, not dictate to you.

Emotions

The World Says – Follow Them
Religious Legalism Says – Ignore Them
God Says – Give Them To Me

Psalm 56:8 NLT
You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle ….

1Peter 5:7 NIV
Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

Following our emotions often leads to illegitimate reactions
Rage / Hostile Confrontations Gluttony
Judging Shutting Down
Fantasizing Isolation

We must go to the manual and see what God says about our areas of need.

Identity

1 Peter 2:9 ESV
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

1 John 3:1-3 ESV
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears[a] we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

Isaiah 43:1
But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.

Security
John 10:28,29
28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me,[a] is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.

Isaiah 54:17 NASB
No weapon that is formed against you will succeed; And you will condemn every tongue that [a]accuses you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their vindication is from Me,” declares the Lord.

Romans 8:35-39 NIV
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”[a]
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[b] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Intimacy
Hosea 11:4 NIV
I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them.

Romans 9:25 NASB
as He also says in Hosea: “I will call those who were not My people, ‘My people,’ And her who was not beloved, ‘beloved.’”

Companionship
Proverbs 18:24 ESV
A man of many companions may come to ruin, there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Revelation 3:20 ESV
20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

Purpose & Legacy
Jeremiah 29:11
11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare[a] and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Psalm 103:17 ESV
But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children's children,

Psalm 112:1-3 ESV
Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments! 2 His offspring will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.
