Grief is one of the darkest emotions humans can face in their lifetimes. Have you ever grieved over a loved one lost? Do you know how to help others through the grieving process? Know what to say, or what not to say, can help you when dealing with someone who is grieving.

When a loved one dies, it can leave an empty void that quickly fills with feelings of sadness and depression. Can you see how a grieving person might need help getting through that time?

If you want to know more about how to help grieving people, then listen to this episode of Forever in their Hearts, where host Erik Reynolds talks with Valerie Martell, Director of Operations for Martin Brothers Funeral Services about her tips for transitioning through the stages of grief.

When you’re grieving, it might feel like nothing can help. This interview offers is a chance to see that there is a light at what seems like a long, dark tunnel.

What to Say to a Grieving Person

The episode kicks off with Valerie sharing how she can relate to the topic of this episode, as she speaks with grieving people on a daily basis.

Next Valerie offers some of the things you can say to someone who is moving through the various stages of grief.

If you’re unsure how to help someone who is grieving, then using Valerie’s advice can help you avoid a potentially awkward situation.

Specific Situations Dealing with Grief

Then Valerie discusses how to talk to children about grief, as well as how to show you care when you are at a loss for words. During the podcasts you’ll hear her answer these questions:

- Is there any special way to talk to a child who might be grieving?
- How can I show a grieving person I care when I don’t know what to say?
- What small gestures are the most meaningful to a grieving person?

Now ask yourself these two questions: Do I want to know more about helping grieving people? Could I use advice for dealing with my own grief? If you answered “Yes” to either or both questions, then the tips offered in this podcast can help.

Avoid Saying This to a Grieving Person

Next Valerie reveals some of the things you should avoid saying when you are talking to someone moving through the various stages of grief.

Valerie draws this information from experiences she has had while working at Martin Brothers Funeral Chapel in Vancouver.

Knowing how to help a grieving person is important. Knowing what not to say, however, is just as important.

Valerie wraps things up by sharing her final thoughts on how to help a grieving person.
