How do you react to tragedies that affect the whole nation? Do you know how you can grieve with others in healthy ways? If you aren’t sure how to react to events that cause the country to collectively mourn, then it could create a lot of stress in your life.

Grief doesn’t happen all at one time. Are you aware of the stages of grief and how you might experience them for someone outside the Greater Vancouver area?

If you want to know more about grieving as a nation, then listen to this episode of Forever in their Hearts, where host Erik Reynolds talks with Valerie Martell, Director of Operations for Martin Brothers Funeral Services about collectively mourning and how to deal with it.

No one should have to deal with grief alone, whether it’s due to a personal tragedy or something that affects the entire nation. This interview is a chance to learn more about grieving over a national situation, including the loss of someone we may have never met.

What Causes Widespread Grieving

Valerie kicks off the episode by addressing widespread grief. She explains what types of things cause a nation to grieve collectively, and why this happens.

Next Valerie gives a recent example that shook Canadians from coast to coast. Although Canada is known as a peaceful country, this random act of violence proves that we aren’t immune to collectively grieving.

If you aren’t sure how to take part in grieving as a nation when acts such as these take place, then you may not be able to experience the proper phases of grief in healthy ways.

Healthy Ways to Show You Are Grieving

Then Valerie addresses specific things you can do during the grieving process. During the podcast she also answers these questions.

- Is it natural for me to mourn people who I’ve never met?
- What exactly is grief, and how do people usually show it?
- How can a funeral home help me through my grief?

Now ask yourself these two questions: Do I know how collective mourning can benefit me? Have I ever experienced a situation like the ones Valerie describes? If you answered “Yes” to either or both, then you can benefit from the advice offered in this podcast.

Helping Children Grieve after a National Tragedy

Moving on, Valerie focuses on other members of your family such as children and how collective mourning affects them. She also offers tips on things you can do to help them deal with their grief.

There is no age limit on grief, and national tragedies can affect anyone in the country regardless of whether it is a child, an adult, or someone in their golden years.

A funeral parlor in Vancouver has all the resources to help you and your loved ones. What’s keeping you from asking for their help when tragedy strikes and we are grieving as a nation?

Valerie wraps up the episode by sharing some final thoughts and ideas about widespread grief.
