I invite you to join me to share this hour with a very special person in my life - someone I've always looked up to, admired and who I love dearly. My mum, Pauline Reid.
Pauline was born and raised in England. After graduating from grammar school she went on to Teachers' College, left after only a few months, got married, had a baby and went on to have three more! During that time she went back, part- time to continue the teaching degree only to end up immigrating to Canada in 1980 after completing only three out of the required four years.
The next step in the education journey was to pursue a part-time degree at university here in Canada and in 1988 obtained a degree in Psychology. While working on the degree Pauline decided to enter the workforce, as her youngest child had started school. She worked for a small specialty oil company for five years before embarking on a 26 year career with regional government in 1991.
Wanting to utilize her degree in psychology she became a caseworker for people needing income support- a job she truly loved. She was promoted a couple of times, and then more good fortune stepped in. Because of the provincial political climate in 1996, the Chief Administrative Officer needed a person who could conduct research and provide analysis and support. Pauline was that person, and in 1998 the position became permanent and her career as a policy and research advisor was launched. Eventually in the early 2000s she became the Director of the policy unit with staff being responsible for areas such as accessibility, climate change, diversity as well as policy analysis, coordination and advice generally to all departments and regional council.
After a rewarding career, it was time to retire and enjoy other things in life, and in 2017 Pauline left her position and is thoroughly enjoying life - moment by moment.
