Community leaders and law enforcement in Monterey were nervous about the influx of "hippies" into the sleepy town of Monterey. Unlike the city elders, the interviewees who attended were young and excited about the event, and reminisce about how peaceful the event ended up being. Monterey did not have enough accommodations for the surprising number of people who showed up, however, so the community had a creative idea.
