Most days for the last year I have written down roughly 30 things that I am grateful for.
No matter what is going on in my life, where I am or how I feel that day, I still do this.
Ok so maybe I don’t do it every day, perhaps 5 out of 7 days and some weeks less than that but it has profoundly changed how I look at the world …
and how I feel each day.
Our world seems like a pretty negative place a lot of the time. But that perception is not a true reflection of reality – our brains are just wired with a “negativity bias”.
I’m not saying that shit doesn’t happen – I’m not saying that terrifying and horrific things do not destroy lives every day.
But… what I am saying
…is that our 24/7 always-on, news cycle and how much attention we give to social media, triggers the parts of our brain that are wired to react to stimuli it deems negative.
So, our attitudes and how we see the world are more heavily influenced by bad news than good news.
This “bad-news radar” causes us to perceive the world as much worse than it truly is, which then fuels anxiety and fear and many of the negative decisions that flow from those two emotions.
This leads me to the choice I have the freedom to make every day:
Do I want to feed the negativity or do I want to look for the good?
