In 2008, Missouri's electorate was made up of 39 percent white born-again Christians, according to exit polls. Those voters are largely anti-abortion but might bristle at Akin's comment that pregnancy rarely results from "legitimate rape." Dr. George Macones, the chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Washington University, said "there is no evidence anywhere to support such a statement." He added: "It is so disappointing to hear a public official speak without knowledge on such a sensitive subject." St Louis Post
