On Friday and Saturday, April 22 & 23, Antioch Baptist Church in Brooklyn will host Project Safe Surrender - a program where judges set up a makeshift courtroom at the church so that people who have warrants on low-level violations can come and have their cases adjudicated. Considering the historical and recent state of the relationship between communities of color and the criminal justice system, is it a good idea to have the church collaborating with the police and the courts in this way? What about the separation of church and state? Attorney Andrew G. March, a former criminal defense attorney, joins me to explain the legal process. Reverend Joseph Jones, co-pastor of the Greater Zion Shiloh Baptist Church, a liaison with the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office for the past 30 years, & an instrumental contributor to the program's success, details how the program got started and the value that it brings to the community.
